If you’re a social housing tenant, you can swap homes with another housing association or council tenant. This can help you move to a property that better suits your needs, whether it’s larger or smaller.
Benefits of Mutual Exchange
- Quicker move compared to other options
- No location restrictions
- You can exchange multiple times during your tenancy
Eligibility Requirements
Before applying, both tenants need permission from their landlords. The following conditions must apply:
- Both tenants have no rent arrears
- Neither tenant is moving to a property that’s too big or small for their needs (you can move to a property one size bigger, but you’ll need to cover any bedroom tax shortfall)
- Both tenants are secure or assured tenants
- Neither tenant is facing eviction
- Both landlords must agree in writing
Check with us if you’re unsure about eligibility.
How to Find Someone to Swap With
You’ll need to find another person to swap with. You can try:
- Home swapping groups (e.g., on Facebook)
- Local advertising (newspapers, shops)
- The Mutual Exchange website
What Happens After Finding a Swap?
Once you’ve found a swap partner, contact us for a Mutual Exchange application form. We’ll assess your eligibility and let you know within 42 days. The exchange can happen once both parties are approved.
