The Pioneer Group Benefit Entitlement

We know that managing rent payments can be challenging, especially on a low income. If you need support, you may be entitled to help through Housing Benefit or Universal Credit (UC). We’re here to guide you through the process and make sure you get the assistance you’re entitled to.

Housing Benefit is a payment from the Local Council to help with rent costs if you’re on a low income or claiming certain benefits.

Covers rent and some service charges
Doesn’t cover water bills, care or support costs, or some heating charges
Usually paid directly to us as your landlord, four weeks in arrears

If Housing Benefit doesn’t cover your full rent, you’ll need to pay the shortfall yourself to avoid falling into arrears. If you think your Housing Benefit has been calculated incorrectly, you can ask the Local Authority to review it. This process can feel complicated, but Spitfire Services can help you with appeals and advice.

Universal Credit (UC) is a benefit that replaces six older benefits, including Housing Benefit. It’s paid monthly in arrears and includes a rent element, which you must use to pay your rent.

You may need to claim UC instead of Housing Benefit if you have a change in circumstances, such as:

  • A change of address
  • A change in income
  • A change in household members

If you claim UC, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will notify us, and a member of our Incomes & Customer 1st Team will contact you to discuss your rent payments and offer support.

If you fall behind on rent while receiving UC, we may have to request direct deductions from your benefit payments. This could be up to £65 per month or 20% of your UC entitlement which can have a big impact on your finances.

Please don’t wait – if you’re struggling, reach out to us as soon as possible. We’ll work with you to find a solution and help prevent further financial stress.

We understand that applying for and managing UC online can feel overwhelming, but we’re here to help. Many services are moving online, and we want to make sure you have the confidence and support to navigate them.
